Botox and Dysport

As we age, we often start to develop those annoying frown lines on our forehead and between the eyebrows as well as “crow’s feet” wrinkling on the outer edges of our eyes when we smile. To temporarily alleviate these age-associated lines and wrinkles when they begin to appear, I use two products: Botox and Dysporttm. Both are approved by the FDA.

Botox Cosmetic® is widely recognized and was the first neurotoxin to be approved for cosmetic use in the United States. It blocks the nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract, thus, temporarily weakening the muscle that is causing the wrinkle. Results are visible within a couple days and typically last for 3 months.

Dysport works basically the same way as Botox. It’s been approved for use in the U.S. since 2009, although it’s been safely utilized by physicians in Europe for the last 19 years. The results are typically the same as Botox, and it also lasts up to about four months.

I have personally used both of these products and continue to do so. They are extremely safe. You occasionally will see some bruising at the injection site. Also, sometimes we need to touch up an area which can easily and quickly be done at your convenience in the office. Properly used, there is no “mask like” effect that you occasionally hear about.

We routinely incorporate the use of these “wrinkle relaxers” in conjunction with other modalities such as Sciton laser treatments, and fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Artefil to make significant changes without major surgery and downtime. Ultimately, you may require a surgical procedure to achieve the best results, but being able to eliminate some of the lines now can make you look younger, feel better about yourself and buy some time before any major procedure is needed.
