Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Bruce Van Natta has been a practicing plastic surgeon in Indianapolis for over 25 years. A graduate of DePauw University, he received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine where he originally planned to become a cardiovascular surgeon. However, a chance encounter with a plastic surgeon faculty member led him to his calling. He went on to complete 5 years of general surgery residency with an additional 2 1/2 years in the specialty of plastic surgery.

Everybody’s boat floats a little higher if we share information” explains Dr. Van Natta.

Highly respected by his patients and peers for his expertise in breast augmentation, Dr. Van Natta spent the early part of his career focused on immediate breast reconstruction.

He was drawn to the field because it sits squarely at the crossroad of art and science. New innovations and techniques are vital, but to get truly exemplary results, a breast surgeon must also be a sculptor — able to think in 3-D. And like a great chef’s palate, it’s not something that can really be taught. It’s a gift.

For Dr. Van Natta, this gift allows to create better outcomes for his patients.

His goal with every procedure is to deliver on your “wishes and wants”.

But he is also a firm believer in respecting the limitations of your individual anatomy. Sometimes, a patient’s goal can not actually be achieved. A mid-westerner to his core, it is very important to Dr. Van Natta to always have an open and honest dialogue with his patients about their expectations. And if he feels that he can not safely achieve your goal, he’ll tell you.An early adaptor to new technologies, Dr. Van Natta is passionate about staying on top of the latest innovations either through his membership in the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery or through his vast network of colleagues and friends. As someone who is primarily self taught in many of these cutting edge techniques, he feels an obligation to share his expertise with others.

“Everybody’s boat floats a little higher if we share information” explains Dr. Van Natta.

This is why in addition to his active private practice, he is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Plastic Surgery section of Indiana University Medical Center, and travels extensively giving presentations on a national level on breast surgery and soft tissue support. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Van Natta is Medical Advisor for Allergan Breast Aesthetics, and was an active investigator in all of the clinical trials leading up to the re-release of silicone gel breast implants.

Dr. Van Natta enjoys the lifestyle of living in Indy. It has the amenities of a big metro area such as killer restaurants and great sports, but with all the advantages of small town life like no traffic and knowing your neighbors by name. In his rare free time, his hobbies include running a commercial blackberry farm, hunting, fishing and keeping his mind supple reading non-fiction books on brain science. While he loves his job and could not imagine doing anything else, his proudest achievement is helping to raise six pretty awesome kids.
